WHAT IS LURKING IN YOUR WATER?

All water service companies delivering water to households are regulated by government agencies at the state level. The Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) is set by these agencies for a number of common pollutants. Some include: inorganic chemicals, lead, Trihalomethanes (THMS), which is a byproduct of chlorine and organic matter, disinfecting levels of chlorine and chloramine, and total dissolved solids (TDS).

CHLORINE

Municipalities dump chlorine into the water to kill organisms. Humans are organisms too! You absorb more chlorine and chemicals through your skin while showering and bathing than from drinking. Chlorine also dries the skin, and discolors hair and clothes. Drinking tap water that is chlorinated is hazardous, if not deadly, to your health.”

– U.S. Council of Environmental Quality
“Up to 2/3 of the harmful effects of chlorine is due to inhalation and skin absorption while showering.”

American Journal of Public Health

CHLORAMINE

Many municipalities are moving from chlorine to chloramine. Chloramine is listed by the EPA as a hazardous substance. It causes rapid deterioration of infrastructure which can cause lead and other metals to leech into the water. Chloramine is also a respiratory irritant. It stays in the water distribution system longer than chlorine and can react with organic material to create hazardous byproducts. It is much harder to remove chloramine than chlorine.

LEAD

Aging infrastructure and contaminated water sources have made lead contamination a front page issue.
“Lead is especially harmful to the developing brains of fetuses and young children and to pregnant women.”

– World Health Organization
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) has determined that lead and lead compounds are reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens, and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that lead is a probable human carcinogen.

– Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
Children Represent Approximately 80% of the disease impact attributed to lead, with an estimated 600,000 new cases of childhood intellectual disabilities…
